When it comes to Hi-Fi quality sound, PC owners
are sold short; most PC speaker systems are made of plastic and
connected using poor-quality wires. We saw our first set of Edifier
speakers in the last issue and these also go the extra mile in terms
of quality but stop well short on price. The package consists of
one subwoofer and five satellite speakers. The huge subwoofer looks
like a stocky coffee table.
For that money buyers can't expect much, but these Edifier speakers
will be a pleasant surprise. In line with good quality hi-fi speakers,
the cases are made from wood, rather than cheaper, inferior plastic.
The small stands for the satellites need to be screwed into the
base but once that is done, it's a simple matter of plugging in
and listening. The volume and bass controls are hidden away around
the back of the subwoofer which makes them pretty inaccessible but
there is a volume control on a cable which can be mounted near the
keyboard for easy access. In short, the overall sound quality from
these speakers is superb at this price.
